Whatsapp launches its much awaited video calling feature worldwide
Whatsapp, one of the most popular chatting application on the internet with a subscriber base of more than 1 billion, today launched its much awaited video calling feature in more than 180 countries. The feature was wildly anticipated from the firm, and came a year after it introduced voice calling. The video calling facility will available on all three major mobile platforms i.e. iOS, Android and Windows.
With the new feature, Whatsapp is now directly competing with the likes of Skype, Viber, and its parent company’s FB messenger. Although there are no charges for video or voice calling on Whatsapp, however, the user needs to pay for the cellular internet usage during the same. Although the mobile carriers may witness an uptick in data usage (thus increased data revenues) due to video calling, it may further erode their voice call revenue. With Reliance Jio already offering free lifetime voice calls and dirt cheap internet plans, the competition between mobile carriers and the online chat services is bound to intensify further.
