Snapchat still reeling under “India is poor” comment

Snapchat, the teenage sensation application which counts stories and ephemeral photos as its core service, is battling a major public relation crisis after one of its ex-employee alleged that the company’s CEO made a statement some time back stating that Snapchat is only for rich people and he doesn’t want to expand in poor countries like India. The statement didn’t go down well with India’s denizens and they started protesting the firm. In an apparent bid to show their discontent, millions of Indians have uninstalled Snapchat application from their phones, and are also downgrading its ratings. Ironically, the application is now at single star in the Apple store, a significant drop from the 5 rating it was enjoying till now.

However, the company’s spokesman has refuted the allegations made by the employee, and confirmed that no such statement was made by the CEO offline. He said that “Those words were written by a disgruntled former employee. We are grateful for our Snapchat community in India and around the world”.

Unintentionally, in a case of mistaken identity, many users are downgrading and uninstalling Snapdeal instead of Snapchat. The e-commerce startup’s CEO had to come out and make a statement to educate the audience about it.
