Smarter Chennai
In June 2015, the Smart City Mission was launched by the Government with an urban renewal and retrofitting program for 109 cities. Chennai, an important hub of technology and automotive firms in India, is one of the cities designated by the government to be transformed into a smart city.
A smart city, in a nutshell, is an urban development vision to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) in a secure fashion to manage a city’s assets, making the city more efficient with the use of artificial intelligence and data analytics.
As pre-requisite, smart cities should provide good infrastructure, flexible economy, smart mobility, friendly environment, skilled and educated people, healthy living, and reliable governance. In line with the smart city initiative across the world, India aims to transform its cities by meeting the following objective:
- Decrease vulnerability of cities to urban migration, demographic changes, environmental degradation and climate change
- Reduce carbon footprint of cities
- Enhance the quality of life for inhabitants
- Improve the environmental quality of the cities
- Establish public-private relationships
- Provide quality education and implement gender equality
- Ensure clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy
- Reduce poverty and hunger
What is BIL?
BIL is an ad-hoc conference for the people looking to change the world in big ways. It is an open, self-organizing, emergent arts, science, society and technology ‘unconference’ inspired by the highly restrictive TED Conference. The BIL, in short, is a place for passionate people to come together to energize, brainstorm, and learn new things to drive innovation, which is at the heart of any smart city.
BIL Smart City Conference – Towards a smarter Chennai
The driving forces behind the smart city initiative in India are mostly technological, economic and environmental changes. Few examples include climate change, economic restructuring, the move to online retail and entertainment, ageing populations, urban population growth and pressures on public finances.
BIL-Chennai, being organized by Founders Institute, Chennai, and MaxBlox, Inc., is specially focused on making Chennai one of the ‘smartest’ cities in the country. To facilitate the change, local and international speakers, government officials, and smart city influencers will be presenting and sharing their knowledge and experience regarding various challenges and solutions for the successful development of a smart city.
“Smart cities, innovation, entrepreneurship and socio-economic development are all linked. Providing infrastructure and connectivity allows smaller businesses to thrive in the startup ecosystem as opportunities grow. To nurture innovation and drive entrepreneurship, interdisciplinary research comprising spatial planning, economic geography, knowledge economy, urban technology as well as marketing is required. Therefore, there is a need for more human resource and intelligence with personalized skills to contribute in specific areas so that more and more businesses are created to meet the vision of a smart city,” says Gopi Mattel (CEO, MaxBlox Inc and CellarStone Inc).
The conference will include brainstorming sessions and speeches by key players involved in the smart city initiative including executives from large IT, telecommunication and energy management companies who will discuss several initiatives for intelligent cities.
The agenda of the conference revolves around the central objectives to be realized by a smart city. These include disaster tracking, energy smart options, building resilient townships, better sanitation, public safety, waste management, smarter city planning, Chennai city government initiatives and entrepreneurship as a solution.
