DentalApps.in: How a one-person startup acquired 70 clients across India and earns 70+% profit?

In a recent telephonic interview, Dental Apps’ Founder, Uday Chander, unfolds an inspiring story about his one-person startup that is breaking prevailing startup stereotypes:

1. Tell us something about your entrepreneurial journey so far? How did it all start?

At 16, soon after my SSLC, I took up my first job of selling emergency lamps. Throughout college, I worked for a local TV cable operator and sold advertising space. It took me various odd jobs, and 11 failed entrepreneurial ventures to finally launch Dental Apps.

2. Share some of the personal challenges you faced in your entrepreneurial journey.

I always knew that Dental Apps would be a success, but I had my tough days as well. After my marriage, I had taken a few bank loans and later found it difficult to repay the EMIs. Providing for a growing family of two kids, my wife is a housewife, the responsibility to meet the household expenses was solely mine. In Jan 2016, I came to a point where I decided to sell my only asset, my two-wheeler for 25,000!

As my debts started growing, all the banks declined me loans and said, “please do not apply again, you will never get a loan from any bank.” But I never gave up. I applied for a Credit Card in one of the promotion stalls, and I still cannot believe the SMS I received saying that you can pick up your Credit Card from Bluedart courier. After that, I decided to maintain my account and paid my bills on time. Recently, I got 12 lacs loan approved from 3 different banks. Yes, miracles do happen. You just need to believe in yourself.

3. You have come far from your struggling days. How does the picture look from here?

I have over 70 clients and 72% profit margin. There are around 1 lakh dentists in the country and about 250 dental colleges out of which 25,000+ dentists pass out each year. There is a big market with no competition as of now. I would be glad to see a competitor in my space. That will be the best validation of my idea.

4. What has been your learning so far as a founder?

You must always chase the problem and not the money. You need to bring value to the market place, and people should trust, like and share your product and service for you to become successful.

5. I see that you have been also interested in speaking, writing and training.

Yes, I am. In fact, I am soon going to launch my book ‘The SEO Expert Work Book 2017 Edition’. It is a step-by-step guide to get the basic SEO right with exercises that does not require any technical knowledge. I am also very much honored to be invited to speak at the Oxford Dental College, Bangalore and Sharada University, Greater Noida, Delhi NCR.

Also, I have completed two SEO Expert Seminar at Taj Vivanta Bangalore and one seminar at Taj Vivanta Delhi.

6. Who inspires you in your solitary entrepreneurial journey?

I am lucky to have distinguished mentors such as Dr Anirban Chatterjee, BDS, MDS, Periodontology; Dr Deepak Bhargava, BDS, MDS, Oral Pathology; Priya Maheswari, Co-founder & CEO at Properji.com (acquired by MagicBricks); and, Saurabh Singh, the IIT(BHU)– IIM(A) founding team member at Clove Dental.

Dental Apps also has two brand ambassadors – Dr Rajeev Kumar G, BDS, Dental Surgeon and Monisha Ramesh, Miss Diva Universe Top 10 Finalist.
