Protecting Startup Ecosystem: Vaishnaw on Google vs Indian Apps

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of safeguarding the startup ecosystem amidst the Google vs Indian apps dispute. He underscored the need to protect the innovative solutions that have contributed significantly to society and the economy.

Vaishnaw played a pivotal role in facilitating discussions between Google and Indian app developers, aiming for a resolution to the conflict over billing policies. He expressed satisfaction that both parties are engaged in regular meetings to find a common solution.

In response to Google’s removal of apps from Indian developers, including popular platforms like Shaadi.com and Naukri.com, there was immediate outcry from Indian internet firms. Leaders like Sanjeev Bikhchandani advocated for the establishment of an indigenous app store, aligning with India’s ‘Digital Public Infrastructure.’

Following government intervention and discussions with IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Google temporarily reinstated the delisted apps, offering them the opportunity to provide in-app payments while extending payment timelines. However, concerns persist among Indian startups regarding fair treatment and equitable terms compared to global counterparts.

Anupam Mittal, CEO of Shaadi.com, condemned Google’s actions as detrimental to India’s internet landscape, likening it to the colonial era. Murugavel Janakiraman, CEO of matrimony.com, highlighted ongoing concerns about Google’s dominance and anti-competitive practices despite previous fines and orders from the Competition Commission of India.

The episode underscores the ongoing struggle for fair treatment and competition in India’s app market, with stakeholders calling for greater accountability and transparency from tech giants like Google.
