Effortless API Development: Speakeasy’s AI-Driven Automation

Developers around the world aspire to create APIs that facilitate seamless integration with their services. However, the process of creating and documenting an API is often time-consuming. Speakeasy, an early-stage startup, aims to simplify and automate these activities.

Sagar Batchu, co-founder and CEO of Speakeasy, defines the company as an API infrastructure provider. Their primary focus is to develop tools that streamline API creation and distribution. Batchu highlights the significance of making it effortless for developers to share their APIs, as it accelerates product adoption for companies and alleviates the integration burden on developers.

To achieve their mission, Speakeasy is initially concentrating on two tools. The first tool assists developers in creating APIs, while the second tool facilitates seamless implementation for API users. By enabling API producers to easily create and maintain Terraform providers from an OpenAPI specification, Speakeasy dramatically reduces engineering overhead and opens up opportunities for a broader developer community.

The first component, Managed SDKs, leverages AI technology. Developers simply provide an Open API spec, and Speakeasy utilizes AI to generate a comprehensive API, complete with documentation. This streamlined approach drastically reduces the time required to complete such a task, condensing it from hours or days to mere minutes.

The second component focuses on facilitating the implementation of the generated API for developer end users. This feature eliminates the need for users to concern themselves with the underlying infrastructure. Speakeasy accomplishes this by creating a package using HashiCorp’s widely adopted Terraform tool. This empowers developers to seamlessly implement the API without worrying about the complexities of the underlying infrastructure.

Currently, the startup comprises nine employees, but they are actively seeking engineers to expand their platform. Batchu believes that embracing a remote-friendly hiring approach will contribute to building a diverse workforce, as it allows them to access talent from various locations. In his words, “We will be looking to hire great talent from everywhere.”

The recent funding round was led by GV, with participation from Quiet Capital, Flex Capital, StoryHouse Ventures, and Firestreak Ventures. In the previous year, Speakeasy raised an additional $3.3 million in a pre-seed round, which was led by Quiet Capital and involved notable industry angel investors.
