Karnataka government gets upper-hand in Uber case

In a long battle between Karnataka government and Uber, the latter gets an upper hand as the court has asked the online cab aggregator to stick to state government rule. Earlier, Uber filed a case against the government for allegedly delaying the state license. In its claim, Uber said that the officials of Karnataka Transport department did not accept its documents to support its claim for a license to operate as app-based taxi aggregator in the state.

As per the Karnataka On-demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rule, 2016 rules, every cab aggregators with a ride-hailing app has to secure a state permit. There are also other restrictions like drivers should be residents of Karnataka for at least two years and possess working knowledge of Kannada language, all vehicles should be fitted with panic buttons and drivers need not work beyond eight hours a day. Following this, both Uber and Ola applied for licenses but the former’s permit was denied.

Now, the government has given a month’s time for Uber to apply for a fresh permit.
